ABOUT RESEARCH

Climate change resilience research in indonesia
The impact of climate change is keenly felt, especially by grassroots communities and rural livelihoods. The livelihoods of these communities in Indonesia are vulnerable to climate variability and change due to their dependence on agriculture, livestock farming, fisheries, and forest utilization. Hence, a research project titled “Climate Change Resilience” has been initiated, focusing on “Understanding the Climate Impact on Grassroots Communities and Rural Livelihoods in Indonesia: Catalyzing Change Towards Adaptation and Resilience.” This research team comprises universities in Indonesia and Australia collaborating with a Consortium of Higher Education-NGOs, namely ITS-Surabaya, KONSEPSI-NTB, TRANSFORM-NTB, Bengkel APPEK-Kupang, YPPS-Flores Timur, YKWS-Lampung, and LP2M-Padang. The study is conducted in four provinces, each with a specific focus: East Nusa Tenggara (Dryland Farmers, Buffalo Herders); West Nusa Tenggara (Rainfed Farmers and Cattle Farmers); Lampung (Coastal Fishermen); and West Sumatra (Wetland Farmers).
This interdisciplinary research aims to assess how climate change impacts grassroots communities and rural livelihoods shaped by various social variables, including cultural dimensions, socio-agroecology, and political economics at the grassroots level. Furthermore, it seeks to identify, facilitate, and catalyze adaptation measures and collective actions among at-risk communities. The research also aims to understand how NGOs, local governments, and universities collectively develop adaptation and transformation agendas at the grassroots level in rural areas. The expected impact of this research is to contribute to more inclusive climate adaptation and resilience policy changes that address the socio-ecological diversity of rural livelihoods in Indonesia.
